Ironman Joe Bonness raises $17,000 for Projects

President Bob joined the rest of the Club in honoring Ironman Joe Bonness with a standing ovation when the check of $4,000 matching funds from Janus for Joe’s Ironman run in Florida was announced. Good job, Joe!!!

Pres. Bob Belcastro, Joe Bonness01/11/07 2006 - Will McDonald Ironman Challenge Wrap Up

It's been a four week whirlwind of triathlons for the Will McDonald Ironman Challenge.

The challenge started in Hawaii with a 6.7 Richter earthquake that threatened to put a stop to the Hawaii Ironman. The Big Island was shaken, but not out. In a few days it was business as usual. Strong currents slowed the swim, light winds sped up the bike setting record times for the course despite intense humidity in the rain drenched, sauna like, lava fields. I finished the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run in 9:47 for 25ih (2nd in 50-54) place beating 1689 to the finish line.

Nov 4th two weeks later, the thermometer dropped in Panama City. We started Ironman Florida in the low 40s, but a calm Gulf of Mexico. Temperature rose during the 112 mile bike and we were in the 70s for the marathon. Quite a faster course than Hawaii, my 9:23 finish was good for 31st place (1st in 50-54) beating 2186.

Nov 11th found us in Clearwater for the inaugural Ironman 70.3 World Championship. It is called a 70.3 for the distance, 1.2 mile swim, 56mile bike and 13.1 mile run. There were some first time pains for this urban race course with 1579 racers on one lane of traffic. Even with a half hour of staggering the starts the triathletes packed up on the bike making passing difficult and the course took its toll of crashes. Naples Triathlete Tom Khale hit a traffic cone, crashed and his $5000 bike was crushed under a speeding bus. I tore up the bike course putting a 5 mm lead on others in my age group. I paid for it on the run giving up the lead and 100 seconds for a 2nd place. I put 1474 behind me.

Along side the Ironman Challenge, I entered Naples North Rotary in the Janus Charity Challenge for Ironman Florida. We earned 4th place for our fundraising total and Janus awarded us $4000.00.

Thank you for your support together we crossed the three finish lines. This is a great tribute to our friend Will.
