2002-2007 Reading-for-Success Project
at Avalon Elementary School
Avalon Elementary School has approximately 498 students. Avalon students come to Naples from all over the world, with over 30 countries represented, though most are from the Caribbean or Central/South America.
Second language issues are a big challenge. That's why placing reading material in the hands of students, their parents, and in the home is very important.
Since most of the students are on free or reduced lunches, their families do not have the funds or the means to provide many educational resources
necessary to reinforce learning. Their primary focus is putting a roof over their heads and food on the table, and they work several jobs just to do that.
The Rotary Club of Naples North has donated T-shirts to inspire reading
and school spirit, bicycle helmets for safety and more than $1,200 to purchase one book for every student at Avalon, Pre-K through 5th grade. Once the books
arrived, they were divided into reading levels ----- either "Emergent," "Early" or "Fluent." Teachers then directed the students to the appropriate table,
according to their reading levels.
